This year at the 2024 Community Action Annual Conference, Michou Tchoffo, who was nominated by Jackie Cross of Anoka County Community Action Program (ACCAP) and was selected to receive the award. Michou is remarkable individual who has overcome numerous challenges on her journey to self-reliance. When Michou and her family immigrated to the U.S. seven years ago, she spoke no English. With determination and the support of programs like Child Care Assistance and Head Start, she set her first goal: mastering the English language. Michou enrolled in ESL classes, eventually earning a Master of Science in Education degree.

Now a passionate elementary school teacher, Michou founded her own nonprofit, YTY PROUD, which empowers immigrant youth and their families to become self-reliant. Starting with just three students, her program has grown to serve nearly 30 young leaders. Additionally, Michou is actively involved in the ACCAP Governing Board and the Head Start Policy Council, focusing on bilingual and leadership education for immigrant families.

Michou’s dedication to learning, leadership, and advocacy is an inspiration to us all. We are proud to support her journey and celebrate her partnership with our programs as she continues to chase the American dream.
