Celebrating Community Through Card Writing

Anoka County Community Action Program (ACCAP) hosted its inaugural Senior Card Writing Event Thursday evening, bringing together dozens of enthusiastic volunteers and staff dedicated to spreading joy to seniors throughout our community. The heartwarming event marked a significant return to in-person volunteer activities for ACCAP's Senior Service programs after a long hiatus.

Participants had the opportunity to craft thoughtful, handwritten messages for various occasions, including Christmas, Valentine’s Day, birthdays, and simply “just because.” Each card was filled with warmth and encouragement, aimed at brightening the days of local seniors. Sarah Anderson, ACCAP Senior Kinship Program Coordinator, said the agency asked the community to donate cards for the event and received an unexpected outpouring that resulted in thousands of donated cards.

Adding to the excitement of the event, two television stations - QCTV and NMTV - covered the Community Action event, highlighting the importance of community engagement and the impact of such initiatives on seniors and the volunteers who choose to give back.

As ACCAP embarks on a new chapter of hosting in-person events, the Senior Card Writing Event is just the beginning, Anderson said. The agency is committed to fostering connections and uplifting the community, especially seniors, and looks forward to hosting additional events to bring people together.
