Marilyn Ocepek of Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency (AEOA) was prsented with the Steve Chadwick Advocacy Award at the 2024 Community Action Annual Training Conference. The prestigious award honors individuals who exemplify the spirit of advocacy for individuals with low incomes and families, following in the footsteps of Steve Chadwick, a former Executive Director dedicated to social justice.
Marilyn has dedicated over 50 years to Community Action, significantly impacting the lives of aging adults and those experiencing food insecurity. Her commitment to enhancing services for seniors across a seven-county region has helped over 17,904 individuals in just the past year. Passionate about her work, Marilyn treasures the connections she builds with clients, ensuring they receive the support they need to maintain a quality life and age safely in their homes.
Marilyn frequently advocates for her clients at the state capital, sharing compelling stories and critical data to emphasize the importance of supporting older adults and community action initiatives. Her efforts have resulted in increased awareness and funding for essential services.
Under her leadership, her department oversees impactful programs such as Meals on Wheels, Groceries to Go, the Medical Loan Closet, RSVP, SNAP Outreach, and various food access initiatives. Marilyn's commitment has been crucial in maintaining and expanding these programs to meet the needs of vulnerable populations.
As Chairperson of the MN Association of Senior Nutrition Services and a representative on various state committees, Marilyn is a respected leader in her field. Without her tireless advocacy, Northeastern Minnesota would not have the robust programs it offers to aging adults today.
